Whether a hobby or an investment, here are eight helpful tips for assembling a collection of antique sterling and/or silver plate flatware.

1. Select a silver flatware: Style, Historical Period or Artist.

Consider your chosen lifestyle and individual preferences, then come up with choices that will be a good fit. Do you plan to use your antique silver flatware almost every day, or rather use pieces from your collection for memorable occasions and holiday celebrations?

There are various specialty aspects of antique silver flatware collecting. It can depend on the type of collector you are. For instance, some collectors center on a certain pattern style, while others focus on a certain silver flatware maker or historical period.

Some antique sterling silverware collectors concentrate on a special genre of antique silver flatware, such as: butter dishes or candlesticks, while others have more varied interests and expand into regional silver flatware, such as Spanish or Mexican, or pieces from specific makers, such as: Alvin or Birks or Sheffield.

2. Mash It Up

Do not be afraid to mix and match patterns.

This collecting concept provides cool aesthetic elegance to a table setting. This is a pleasant choice especially with hard-to-find, or discontinued silver flatware patterns. And will benefit you for assembling a set extensive enough for entertaining your family, friends or guests.

3. Signs of Overuse or Damage

A history of overuse does not always lower the value of antique silverware or sterling silver flatware, while actual damage may or may not. For instance, minor damage or blemishes on a rare flatware piece will not significantly lower its value. The price of a tarnished piece should be lower than retail, of course. Be mindful of buying tarnished silver flatware through the internet. Pictures can be deceptive and obscure obvious wear, flaws or repair. Acquiring tarnished pieces at estate sales and flea markets may be an an alternative, but examining them closely for wear remains a fundamental skill for your collecting hobby or business.

4. Monograms

A lot of collectors view aged, ornate monograms as a lost art form and historically relevant. It does not detract from the desirability or appeal of a silver flatware collectible when a monogram is displayed. Most pieces are, however, have more market worth without a monogram. As you gain more experience with antique silver and sterling silver flatware, you will develop skills to recognize if the monogram has been removed. Monogram removal can damage a piece of antique silver and markedly limit its market appeal.

5. Authenticity

A number of collectors frown upon antique silverware pieces that have been restored, such as those with replacement knife blades. It is not uncommon for antique silverplate knife blades to show signs of wear and usage. They can easily be repaired on hollow handle knives, Various collectors favor to have them replaced with stainless steel blades. However, stainless steel was not introduced in flatware manufacturing until the early 1920s. This is one of those aspects of collecting that can be a matter of personal choice, but you do need to be aware that your antique silver flatware may decline in value if you replace the knife blades.

6. Repairs

Dents, or general types of damage can be repaired by a silversmith. Pieces can also be replated by a skilled silversmith. The cost can be costly for more common items, but it is certainly worth it to restore rare antique silver flatware pieces. cut to appear like ice cream forks or a sugar spoon may have been altered to resemble a sugar sifter. As your knowledge expands, look for signs of modification and avoid investing in those modified pieces.

8. Fake Antique Silver Flatware

New fake pieces in common and rare pattern designs can be found for sale regularly on the Internet. In particular:, butter dishes and sought after pieces such as asparagus servers. Many of these pieces have no maker's markings. Further, forged artist's marks in silver have persisted for hundreds of years. The age of an antique silverware piece does not really indicate it's genuineness. So the lesson here is start and continue your learning and improve your skills to reduce the risk of investing in forged or fake antique silverware collectibles.
